Join RCIScience, in partnership with EcoSpark, for an exploration of one of Toronto’s most beloved urban parks as we learn how to survey butterflies, identify birds in the field and share nature photographs–all for science!
In this nature-themed workshop, we’ll use popular tools of the trade, including binoculars and butterfly nets, to monitor local biodiversity, understand why it’s a good marker for ecosystem stability, and contribute to online databases for citizen science. No scientific background is required as EcoSpark staff provide resources and tips to find and identify a wide variety of plants, insects and animals using interactive species ID apps and field guides. Explore local data with online maps and research connections between climate change and biodiversity.
Leave this workshop feeling empowered to contribute your own outdoor nature observations from backyards, parks, or other areas near home to online databases and help further environmental research.
This is a small group, in-person, outdoor event.
Materials
EcoSpark will provide scientific equipment (e.g. binoculars) for the nature investigation.
Tablets or devices are suggested but not required. Participants may want to bring devices to photograph insects and plants as we conduct surveys at the site. Optionally participants may download the Seek app to assist with field ID and/or create an iNaturalist account. Participants may join EcoSpark’s iNaturalist project page. Nature images by participants can be submitted via the Seek app or manually, to help EcoSpark collect useful ecological field data during the Park Watch session.
