The Royal Canadian Institute for Science (RCIScience) is now accepting nominations for its annual awards celebrating excellence in Canadian science communication. The Sandford Fleming Medal has been awarded annually since 1982 to individuals working in Canada who have made outstanding contributions to science communication and the public understanding of science. The Logan Award recognizes excellence in promoting the public understanding of science by a Canadian organization. Together, they are two of a limited number of awards highlighting outstanding science communication efforts in Canada.
Nominations (a two-page letter) should include a description of the nominee’s work and how it has impacted the public’s understanding of science across Canada. Outreach should communicate science broadly and reach a wide audience. Where possible, please provide at least two letters supporting the nomination. Nominations must be submitted via email to information@rciscience.ca by no later than June 30 2024. For more information visit www.rciscience.ca/awards.
Background
For 175 years, RCIScience has been inviting scientists out of their labs to engage the public with science. We envision an engaging science culture for everyone in Canada, valuing scientific knowledge and integrity, and leading to a better society. The Sandford Fleming Medal has been awarded annually since 1982, with previous recipients including David Suzuki, Ursula Franklin, Chris Hadfield, Molly Shoichet, Timothy Caulfield, André Picard and many more.
The William Edmond Logan Award was created in 2015 as a companion to the Fleming Medal to recognize organizations rather than individuals. Past winners include Sanofi Pasteur Canada, IBM Canada and CBC radio’s Quirks & Quarks. Together, these awards celebrate outstanding, and growing, science communication efforts in Canada.
