The Royal Canadian Institute for Science is now accepting nominations for its annual awards recognizing excellence in Canadian science communication. The Sandford Fleming Medal is awarded annually to individuals working in Canada who have made outstanding contributions to science communication. The Logan Award recognizes excellence in promoting the public understanding of science by a Canadian organization. Together, they are two of a very small number of awards highlighting outstanding science communication efforts in Canada.
For 173 years, RCIScience has been inviting scientists out of their labs to engage the public with science, furthering our vision of an informed public that embraces science to build a stronger Canada. Since 1982, RCIScience has awarded the Sandford Fleming Medal annually to a Canadian who has made outstanding contributions to the public understanding of science – to advance our vision. Previous recipients include David Suzuki, Ursula Franklin, Chris Hadfield, Molly Shoichet, Bob MacDonald and, most recently, Timothy Caulfield and André Picard.
The William Edmond Logan Award was created in 2015 as a companion to the Fleming Medal to recognize organizations rather than individuals. Past winners include Sanofi Pasteur Canada, IBM Canada, the Science Communication Program at Laurentian University and Ryerson University’s SciXchange. Together, these awards celebrate outstanding, and growing, science communication efforts in Canada.
